The Federation of British Bonsai Societies
Friends and PeopleIt was earlier in the year when I read the “Chairman’s report” by Reg Bolton in the back pages of March/April Bonsai Focus
“Conversation amongst bonsai enthusiasts invariably veers towards the possibilities of doing greater thinks in the UK and the limiting factors – as in so many things – are not ambition, vision or willingness. In this instance, not even finance is the inhibitor. The constraint is the time people are willing to spend to support national events. A couple of new faces on the council would see the Federation moving forward with tremendous benefit to all our members. So if you have some spare time, give me a call and we can find a way for your support to be beneficial both for you as an individual and the rest of British bonsai.”
I spend a lot of my time developing and improving Bonsai in my local area, and have a lot of interest in improving the standards of Bonsai and its education within the UK. I am of the belief that to improve Bonsai we need to focus on the majority, and the majority of people who do Bonsai in the UK are enthusiasts within clubs and societies.
“Supporting, Sustaining and Spreading Bonsai in the UK”
It seemed that what Fobbs aimed to achieve fell in line with my own aspirations quite well, and it seemed a great idea to contact Reg via Phone to offer my services to the organisation.
We spoke on the phone for 20 minutes, mainly about my experiences and history in Bonsai, and what the organisation is wanting to do going forward. The conversation went well, and ended with Reg saying that he would have to discuss the matter with Paul the secretary and he would then come back to me.
Six weeks later I emailed them as I had heard no response from our phone conversation; it took them 3 weeks to respond to this email. Reg said he was sorry for the delay in getting back to me, but they are really busy at the moment with Chelsea and EBA and so on. He said that they certainly want to bring me into the organisation and will be in touch soon to finalise things.
A further 6 weeks later I emailed again, this time I got a response within 2 weeks. Apparently there are 2 more people who are joining the organisation, and they are in the process of arranging a time when we can all get together to arrange things. I was told that I was wanted to take over the organisation of the New Talent Contest in the northern half of the country, and again that they would be in touch soon. This was 2 months ago, I have heard nothing since.
So as I have said I was supposed to be joining Fobbs this year. Notice the past tense. It was concerning to see that several members of there council left in a relatively short space of time, but now, im not at all surprised.
It will be because Fobbs is possibly one of the loosest descriptions of the word “organisation” possible. If im being honest any organisation has to have a few fundamental things in place, and one of the most important is its communication. It isn’t acceptable in this day and age to have 3 week turn around times on emails, nor is it acceptable to say that you will be in touch and not do so.
The excuses are that they were busy attending the EBA meeting, putting on a show at Chelsea, and a few other shows. I fail to see how attending the EBA has done anything in this instance to promote Bonsai here. That time would have been better spent getting the obvious problems addressed. It can almost be claimed as an abuse of power going gallivanting to Europe, when the organisation that sends you is on its arse.
If im being honest, it seems apparent that Fobbs is a bit of a sham. There mission statement if you will is “Supporting, Sustaining and Spreading Bonsai in the UK”, none of which seems to be happening.
Almost all of my Bonsai Friends raised an eyebrow when I mentioned my intentions to join Fobbs, and these are people who are at the top of there profession in this country. Frankly, each of them does more to promote Bonsai here than Fobbs have in there existence.
My only hope is that the last leg falls off and it dies. This sounds harsh but I think clubs and there members of this country deserve an organisation that is at least organised. One that actually follows its own mission statement as well would be a start. Apart from the Insurance, 95% of societies in the UK have no involvement from Fobbs whatsoever. This is wrong.
It’s also a travesty that what is considered to be one of the top 5 European countries for Bonsai has such a sham at its helm. The organisation that does the same job in other countries do a great job. Check out Italy, Spain and Germany’s equivalent and you will see that they are doing good work that benefits there members.
Reg, if you have any hopes of sorting out the mess that you are in, when people come to you offering help, take it. These are the people who WANT to make a difference. You put out a call for help, and you were offered it. Guess you were to busy acting the chairman to actually BE the chairman.
