Sorry it has been so quiet. Many reasons.
Busy with the new house and job. All going well.
Computer problems which i think are now sorted. So,,,,,
Bonsai stuff has also been quiet just feeding and watering. Have picked up a couple of new little pieces to work on.No plans to show anything this year as i am to busy with the other things.
Had a day off and went to the Exvale show last w.e.
It was nice to catch up with some old friends.
Celtic Knot (Dragon Bonsai) put on their usual excelant show and also Gordon Duffet was there with some nice pots. Yes, i was tempted and bought one and ordered another.

Too Late.

I can’t believe that we’re at the end of Feb already.

Fortunately, no proposals . It could have been a little awkward. He.He.

Have settled into the new residence but have a lot of work ahead.

BONSAI are waking up so i will have to be more attentive to their needs.

I will try to post some more interestering stuff soon.

Christmas.

I just want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

sorry to have been a little quiet but a lot has happened .

In the New Year i start a new job and then 2 days later move house so i will not be back for a few weeks.

Hopefully Christmas will bring some good Bonsai things to get the new year off to a good start.

Weather was good so i started the Autumn lifting of material.

First out was a Maple.

maple.JPG  This is Acer palmatum Garnet.

This one went well and came out with a nice compact root system.

           lifted.JPG  Lifted.               trunk1.JPG Trunk.

This one is 28″/70cm high with a 5″/12.5cm trunk.

Early days for this one. It has been developed from a larger tree that was removed from a garden 5 years ago.

It had died back and the owner did not want it any more.

I think there is a future for this one. Maybe long term but it does have a nice trunk.

The left hand log of the root is part of the old root system and can easily be reduced to help with the nebrari.

This part is probally the tree’s weakest point but it can be worked on.

Autumn lifting.

They give a fine w.e.

I will attempt to lift my Pinus slyvertrus beaurolences.

Whish me luck. I will try to rember to take photo’s as it happens.

News

I have to apologize for the lack of content lately.

I recently put my house up for sale and have had 3 offers already.

I am now in a state of mild PANIC trying to find somewhere else to move to and also cater for the collection, which isn’t large ,but will still need some space.

I will try to post some more interesting things soon.

Shohin larch carving

Had some time to do the first carving on the shohin Larch.

area-to-carve.JPG  This is the area that needs to be worked on.

I started by first drilling a pilot hole with a normal drill. Then i used two more bits to enlarge the hole.

pilot-hole.JPG pilot hole.         Then bigger bit.  big-bit.JPG

I then had to get the big machine out.

This is a Bosch die grinder.  Depending on the bits used it can remove a lot of wood quickly.

   tool.JPG  Tool.                                   rasp.JPG  Rasp bit.

I then started the carving.

What i found difficult was holding the tree and carving at the same time.

I have only ever carved large trees before, which are stable in their pots, so attempting to use a big machine on a small tree was not easy.

So, by holding the tree and using the tool one handed i started.

first-carve.JPG  I enlarged the hole and then started to carve the trunk.

Then i worked on the uro. uro.JPG

I drilled a hole to connect the shari with the uro so that water would not collect in the trunk and cause future problems with rotting.

Then i got out the Dremel.

dremel.JPG  This gave me the chance to try out last years christmas present.

I was given a felexable drive for my dremel. To be honest, it is only of use for cleaning with brushes. It does not work very well with carving tools, for Bonsai use.

All the rough edges were cleaned up.   finish.JPG

I did not treat the finished carving with “jin seal” as i prefer to let nature do it’s work on the carving. I find this adds a nicer patina to the finished work.

For now i am pleased with the result. It may need some more work in the future for refinement.

Blackthorn Fruit.

I left some fruit on my Blackthorn this year.

They are ripening now so i thought i would take some photos before the blackbirds return and take them.

The fruit can be used to flavour Gin.

Perhaps i should make some and then i could exchange some with Wolfgang for some Schnaps.

Exmouth Show.

I went to the Exmouth show on July 1st.

There were some excellent trees on display from Ex Vale, North Devon and South Devon Bonsai Societies.
